InformationSt Carthage (or Mochuta) was from a rich family in Kerry. As the youth loved the chanting of the psalms, the local king arranged for him to become a priest. After spending a year possibly at Bangor, he founded his own monastery at Rahan in 595. It grew rapidly but opposition forced him to move south around 637, finally reaching Lismore with hundreds of monks and patients from his leper colony. Founded a monastery there and died in 638. |

InformationSt Brendan was from Kerry, born in 486 A.D. He studied at Clonard under Saint Finnian. His name is connected with many places in Kerry including Ardfert and Mount Brandon. He visited Scotland, reaching the Hebrides and, possibly, places beyond. In 568 he founded the monastery in Clonfert, where he died in 578. The Prayer of St. Brendan
Help me to journey beyond the familiar
and into the unknown.
Give me the faith to leave old ways
and break fresh ground with You.
Christ of the mysteries, I trust You
to be stronger than each storm within me.
I will trust in the darkness and know
that my times, even now, are in Your hand.
Tune my spirit to the music of heaven,
and somehow, make my obedience count for You.
Clonfert is a place of pilgrimage and healing today and is the site of Emmanuel House of Providence.
