St Carthage

Information

St Carthage (or Mochuta) was from a rich family in Kerry. As the youth loved the chanting of the psalms, the local king arranged for him to become a priest. After spending a year possibly at Bangor, he founded his own monastery at Rahan in 595. It grew rapidly but opposition forced him to move south around 637, finally reaching Lismore with hundreds of monks and patients from his leper colony. Founded a monastery there and died in 638.
