St Bernardine of Siena

Information

St. Bernardine (1380 - 1444) was a famous reformer and an eloquent preacher who travelled throughout Italy. St. Bernardine of Siena has been called the Doctor of the Heart of Mary due to his writings on Mary's heart.

He wrote, "from her heart, as from a furnace of Divine Love, the Blessed Virgin spoke the words of the most ardent love".

He was known for his extensive use of the monogram IHS, an abbreviation for Iesus Hominum Salvator, Latin for 'Jesus Saviour of Man'. This is sometimes inscribed on the chasuble worn by the priest during the Mass, for the priest offers the sacrifice of the Mass in persona Christi.
