Mary's role in the history of salvation is prefigured in the Old Testament, in the book of Judith for example, while the events of her life are recorded in the New Testament.

The principal events of Mary's life are celebrated in the feasts of the Church. One such feast is The Birthday of Mary, celebrated on September 8th since the seventh century.

She was the only daughter of  Joachim and Anne. Born in Jerusalem, Mary was presented in the Temple at age three and took a vow of virginity.
